The Peak District is truly a hidden treasure.
It offers historic villages coloured by the dark gritstone of the Dark Peak or the white limestone of the White Peak, stately homes such as Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, wonderful walking across miles of open, moorland and craggy and brooding hills grazed by sheep.
Curbar is a gritstone village in the Dark Peak. It lies just below the dramatic Gritstone Curbar Edge, the renowned beauty spot of the area with its breathtaking views across the Hope Valley.
There is no need to drive from either of our cottages to enjoy the excellent walking. You can walk straight onto the moorland paths which lead to Curbar Edge and beyond. There are many excellent walking itineraries which lead directly from the door.
The River Derwent flows through the valley. Its banks provide peaceful walks. Its common to see a fly fisherman landing a trout or grayling.
This is one of the most important rivers of Derbyshire and many historic and picturesque villages lie along its banks.
The Chatsworth Estate is 2 miles away with many interesting activities- the House itself, the fabulous walks across The Park, the formal gardens and glass houses as well as the Farm Shop with all its delicacies.
Haddon Hall, only a few miles away, is a magnificent example of a perfectly preserved mediaeval manor house.
The nearby town of Bakewell is a beautiful riverside market town, the home of the Bakewell Pudding.
There are many other interesting villages and monuments to be visited in the area including many different ancient Standing Stone sites and the famous plague village of Eyam (3miles away) with its museum, church and the historic Eyam hall.
Even on wet days there is plenty to do. Castleton caverns offer a subterranean spectacular of sculpture created by centuries of dripping water.
This is also the area where the semi-precious blue-john is mined and there are many shops in Castleton selling blue-john jewellery.
The Edale Valley, Kinder Scout, Bleaklow and the Upper Derwent Valley are all popular places for both short and long walks.
Other outdoor activities such as rock climbing, hang-gliding, cycling, mountain biking and caving are possible locally.
Curbar Trekking Stables are located at the top of the village for those who prefer to ride across the moors and riding lessons are available. |
